Without a doubt... go for the X-terra 70, it offers high performance.. good depth, sensitivity and program versatility. It does not have such a high learning curve as the explorer range, and therefore suited from beginner to Pro. For further info get yourself over to the Minelab Forum and ask away and view its use on MLO Television..

Thought about the Sovereign GT? Excellent in pasture and I consistently find more targets than most when out with my club.

I've used all your listed models.
Didn't like the 70 so thats gone on the grounds of performance to price ratio.
You might find the Quattro a little lacking in features.

Might be easier to do it the other way round. The only Minelabs I've liked are the Tribune/Musketeer/Advantage (single frequency) and the Sovereign range (multi-frequency).

Tribune is very old now so perhaps best avoided unless really cheap.
The Musky/Advantage are great on land and were really cheap in view of the performance. No good on wet salt though.
The Sovereign range work well almost anywhere even on salt beaches (perhaps not Roman spoil heaps).

If you condider an older Explorer I would be wary of E-Bay because of there build problems.

Is there no one round you who could let you handle the different models ?

I can vouch for the Sovereign GT as I have used it for wet sanding on the beach, shallow water hunting in the ocean and in Lake Michigan, and of course in sunny Lincolnshire on farm land, always performs well , can handle bad ground and if you sweep slow enough and learn the Sovereign wiggle you can pick out good stuff thru iron contaminated areas. The Sovereigns are good all round machines, a good assortment of coils available ,highly talked about , fun to use and good value for money. Of course thats only my biased Sovereign using opinion.

have used all the models u mentioned and the worst was by far the quattro. the terra 70 was as brian has already said over priced for the performance and also your stuck with the expensive extra coils if you want to get the best from it.
the explorers take a lot fo getting used to but very good machnes if you have the patience to learn them. the explorer II would be your best option and they can be gotten for between 250 and 400 depending on whats with it.

you would be better off trying them as has been suggested already

They say that BBS technology isn't the best where there is a lot of air, so fresh plough and stubble shouldn't, in theory, be so hot. I haven't yet used mine on fresh plough, but have used it on freshly seeded with no problem, even turning up some nice silver. I have to say I'm very happy with the GT, but 5 months in I do feel I'm still learning. Although it is a pick up and go machine, give it time and it gets better and better. As Brian says, heavily contaminated sites can be a bit tricky because its recovery speed isn't so good. Go slow, use a small head and you'll be fine though.
