Well managed to get out for a few hrs yesterday, and as the kids are on their hol's I frankly needed a break ! My tectin buddy Bob and I decided to visit a site known as "Hammered Patch" for two reasons, firstly it has produced a good few hammies and because of this we have hammered it !

We arrived at the site expecting it to be in pasture, but were pleased to see that it had been ploughed, seeded and rolled.. We checked in the farmer and he said no problem it was only seeded yesterday. We got kitted up and feeling like two soldiers about to go over the top in trench warfare we purposefully entered the "Patch" Rolling Eyes

I ground balanced the SE and set off, Bob had decided to give his Hawkeye a go, which later he was to regret. The ground was aerated still from the previous days seeding, first signal comes through loud and proud, it was the end section of a 15th century buckle, moved on at an even slower pace and ten minutes later was rewarded with a quarter cut, the next half an hour accounted for some lead and copper alloy bits and another medieval artefact (handle) We had decided to call time in 20 mins, so like a man possesed I was determined to try to eek out another hammy.. With ten minutes to spare I managed a hammered penny of Edward. What a day, those short and sweet tectin sessions are often hard to beat.

The SEF coil performed perfectly, and remained stable even though Explorers are not meant to like to much air around the coil, a problem I have never encountered.. The coil really made those difficult to hear signals come to the fore, Even though the SEF has proven itself before, I thought this was going to be a challenge too far ! but how wrong I was, I only managed to detect half of hammered patch, so guess where I the SEF and SE will be at the weekend !! the pinpointing was spot on again, and after nearly two hrs of tectin I had no arm fatigue

To nicely end a great couple of hrs tectin I told Bob to stop at a Farm we had thought about trying to get, which is alongside a roman road and on the edge of a medieval village. I caught the farmer just right as he was finishing off his milking, he was a lovely chap.. and I explained that we would like to gain permission for his farm.. He warmly said yes, and we gave him a bottle of wine as a thankyou.. Good tip that lads.. keep a couple of bottles in the boot (well wrapped) We discovered that the Farm is 2000 acres and his brother's have two other Farms in the vicinity which he said he will secure for us to search..

"Perfick" end to the day, it really does not get much better than that !!

Anybody know if these coils are waterproof ? so you could use them on the wet sand and not have to worry about getting them wet.

Went back to the Hammered Patch at the weekend.. pulled up a poor conditioned Edward VI halfpenny and a few bits of lead. That was the last trip there now until the crop comes off..
