Ok.

Coin one appears to be a silver antoninianus Herrenius Etruscus, but I will have to refer to my books to confirm that.

Coin 2, 3 and 5 are Constantine II as Ceasar. The legends should be CONSTANTIVS NOB C or CAES, meaning Constantinus Nobillisimus Caesar. The reverse is of the GLORIA EXERCTIVS type (the Glory of the Army), and depicts 2 Roman legionaries between 2 legionary standards. This type is the most common of all Roman coinage.

4 appears to be either Claudius II Gothicus or someone of the same era. It doenst appear to be a common coin since this emperor is laurate and not radiate crowned. I will have to get a 2nd opinion on this too.

Wow, Thanks.

Do you have a date for them so that I can tie down the times of the site I am working on.

Ok. First Coin is Valerian, not Etruscus.

Obv:- IMP C P LIC VALERIANVS AVG, Radiate draped and cuiarssed bust right
Rev:- P M TR P V COS IIII P P, Emperor seated left on curule chair holding globe and sceptre

Number 4 is a follis of Diocletian. Trier mint.

Thats 3 coins you have found so far from Trier, that I can identify. I assume they are from the same site?

As to dates, the GLORIA EXERCITUS type for Cons. II was minted between 330-333 AD.

The Valerian is 257AD (the consulship enables us to know the precise date of issue.)

And Diocletian from 284 to 305 AD. cant give you a better date!

Thanks Ned and Gordon.

It helps me to identify the site that I am working on. I have spent three days metal detecting the site and start the dig with a friend tomorrow.

The site is totally untouched and the field has just been ploughed.

below is a picture of the site

From the coinage it appears to be active around the 2nd - 3rd century. Keep us posted with your findings Shawn. Good hunting!

The site was first researched in 1996 and is on private land.

Permissions were gained and approved.

The last 3 weeks we have been researching the site including obtaining photos from swindon (updated fron the 1996 picture we had), measuring the site, field walking and metal detecting whilst ploughed

We have spent the last 2 days measuring the site using various methods to ensure that we had the right position of the villa and after this we decided to do some test trenches.

The test trenches were done yesterday and today and were done in full view of a trained archaeologist and historian.

The results have so far been interesting and I will shortly post some pictures and a report. The finds we have made will go to the local museum and I am in contact with the county SMR Officer.

Regards
Sean
