Just got a phishing mail PAY PAL Services (Pay-Pal Services.com.uk)

Except it doesn´t come from them, when you dig a little deeper the return address is as follows :

nobody@games.allgamesallfree.com

Don´t reply to this mail, it will undoubtably lead to an almost identical site as that of pay-pal where you will be asked to enter details, and then you´ll be right upto your armpits as your accounts get emptied. Laughing

Easy solution to phishing - just use Firefox and in Preferences tick the box that says "Tell me if the site I'm visiting is a suspected forgery". I hope people are using Firefox anyway, as it's a more secure browser. The only safe way into secure sites is to close your browser, wipe the cache, restart the browser and freshly type in the genuine address of www.paypal.com

I keep getting phishing emails for a bank of scotland account that I don't have - turns up about once a fortnight. I have had the paypal one a couple of times. I wish I knew how on earth they got my e mail address as I don't like giving it out. I have also had phonecalls asking me to "confirm a few security details" before they tell me what the call is about to which I reply - "write to me about it and don't ever call me again". There are a lot of pathetic people out there doing all these scams but I guess they must get some success as they are so persistent. Rolling Eyes

You should never ever reply to any of these emails as when you do they know that your email exists and is then added to an active list and sold as active emails at quite high prises. You then get even more dodgy emails for viagra, software and all number of enlargement ideas Shocked (thought the wife had been spilling the beans Embarassed )
So just delete em

I've been reporting the U.K. bank ones to the banks concerned. This led to an increase in fake ones !
I wonder if "blocking sender" which I was also doing to no effect, bounces them back and they have a system to log this and know your there for a later try under a different sender name.
Perhaps just deleting would be just as good. Its certainly quicker to do.

If you use an email program like Microsoft Outlook or Outlook express the norm is to open emails in html, this is very unsafe as there maybe malicios code(that you can't see) activated like for example send back to sender the word ok if opened, this will then let them know that your email exists(this is nothing to do with reading confirmation)

The best thing to do is use a program like TheBat and open in text form
http://www.ritlabs.com/en/products/thebat/index.php

lets you open in text form, has antispam that learns and many other goodies like mail sorting to diferent accounts and folders, been using it for years. It easy to install, configure and find on the net, nudge nudge Wink Wink if you know what i mean
Its also multi language that can be changed on the fly.

Very informative post Kered.
Will give it a try. I now dread going abroad for a few weeks as when I come back there's pages of dross + I'm with Tiscali which is cheap but doesn't have a good record for this sort of thing.

I know nowt about detectors but been with computers since the bbc micro
(showing my age)

Mostly if you have a good antivirus program they will pick up the malicios code, that joined with a good firewall(not the windows joke) can block even the newest atempts as they will detect every outgoing attempt and give you a warning and ask for permiscion to open an outgoing port

I use Nod32 Antivirus(not heavy on PC resorces like symantec) by Eset and Agnitum Outpost firewall, Outpost is a bit annoying at times but it seems to do the biz.
Zone alarm is pretty good and has a free version that works.

You can go to www.grc.com and do the shields up test to see how your pc security is, you should get all green if things are ok
The site has some good tips on PC security, worth a read

Try AVG free for antivirus, updates every day on boot up. Spybot for spyware, prevents registry changes without your premission.

Both are free.
