I am new to metal detecting. I would like to use my garrett 250 when we go caravanning. Does anybody know if it is O.K. to use such equipment in France and/or do I need any permission!
I would appreciate any advice or tips.
Regards,
Steve.

You can't search for ancient coins/artifacts etc without written authority (which will not be granted). Plus written permission from the landowner has to be submitted.
The old Royal forests are still out of bounds and some beach areas classed as "war graves".

Thats the bad news.

The good news is that you can search for recent finds and if an older find turns up thats your good luck. Usual exclusions apply as in this country. No detecting on protected sites but the farmer/landowner will know so if you get permission you are O.K.

Unless you can speak french It might be a good idea to get something written up (in french) explaining what you are doing in case of
the police they might not be so clued up with the regulations ..... something like I am a responsible metal detectorist and
I am looking for lost modern coins and if I find anything that is old or valuable I will report it to the local authoritys... the English are reasonably liked in the south and going out of the way to comunicate in their language goes a long way ..... it could help you out in a bad situation
What UK BRIAN has said is sound ..... but that dosent mean everyone including the police knows that.... I have heard alot of good stories from English detecting in france .... good luck Mark....

You´re also supposed to get permission from the local Prefect, which isn´t usually a problem. I used to detect the parking area´s, especially around the seats, and usually made enough to pay for my evening meal and a few beers and wine too. Police were usually very polite, and no problems.

just aquick update on what I have said... joining the N C M D
could be a good idea too coz you are instantly covered world wide
for any damage you might have done and the membership card would back you up as a responsible detectorist and lets face it
any official looking card spreaks volumes

but listen dont worry this is only in a bad situation most people are human beings too...... Regards Mark....
