You could always go to Boston lincolnshire and pretend you are abroad, I think they still have the same UK metal detecting rules there and there are still some signs in english just in case you get lost.

There's not that many totally restricted countries. Egypt/Greece are. A few regions of Germany. I've got a feeling that there's a ban in one region of Holland now. Spain is iffy and I think it might be the beach cleaners who egg the police on there.

I've been all over the place including Africa/South America/Russia with no problems yet I got arrested and fined for taking a photo of a horse drawn carriage (the type Dracula uses) outside a railway station. Railway stations were classed as restricted at the time !!

Is that definate now Ray ?
There's a few people still posting finds made in Portugal off of the beaches and there's a couple of listed beaches that are strict no go areas but why have no go beaches if there's a total ban ?

There's a few drawbacks.

One or two of the big hotels consider the beaches in front to be their property. At worst your asked to move on.

Inland you may have the police or army turn up. Its best to carry either a cool box with drinks to hand out or a box of oranges. Then your all best of friends.

The north, butting on to the U.S. border is best avoided as there's constant checks what with drug and people smugglers.

If you have the receipt for your detector take it with you as when you return to the U.K. our customs may think your doing a grey import.

Re detecting Portugal I found Jonas's post from January that says it seems possible to hunt on the beaches except

"beaches that fall within the protection area of subaquatic archaelogical sites" or
"beaches with a special protection status ie the Arado river estuary in the Algarve".

Officially it´s a total ban, if they catch you, or decide to catch you, it´s very expensive, you lose your detector, and if unlucky can end up spending a longer holiday that planned. It all depends if plod see´s you, and decides he has nothing better to do I expect.
