Everything I read about it before buying was positive. Most people seemed to say it's a great machine for starting out.

I thought that to start with I would dig some junk. Just until I start to recognize the different sounds and indications on the lcd screen. But it hasn't got any better at all. I have come to the conclusion that with this machine you have to dig up everything. The only thing it can tell you is if it's Iron or not. Most finds will cause the machine to give it's entire range of 3 different sounds as you sweep it several times to locate it. I don't know why but I thought that it would be able to sound more subtle variations of tones for different types of metal. I am not sure if I expect too much or have I just bought a very limited device.

how long have you had this detector?
it takes a long time and a lot of practice to stop diging junk with any detector and if you have stoped diging iron and not mising good targets all ready then you are doing well.

If the signal is springing over the full range, then it´s normally junk. You´re looking for a nice clear signal. On your discrimination, remove just the first one or two blocks, as that will get rid of the most common IRON. Sensititivity on the 150, don´t over power the machine, take a block off so that you´re running at 75 to 80%. Now the signals should be better, and the machine can discriminate easier. Cool

I bought one a few months ago as a dry sand machine. I only do beaches and my wet sand PI Goldquest SS is overkill on dry sand. I was really pleased with it. Basically, I find, if it doesn't lock on straight away it's rubbish. I dug a few to check that out jumping signals, different sounds from different angles etc are all trash.

It's an amazingly cheap machine, but perfect for recent losses on the beach and I know a couple of people who use them inland. One thing, I only use it in jewellry mode as in coin mode it discs out some of our modern coins. Reason I say that, is it might disc out those hammered coins you guys go gaga over Smile

Jewelry mode is the ideal mode for the UK on both the 150 and 250.
Also the larger optional coil makes this into a very effective machine that can hold it´s own with most machines in the 300 to 400.00 pound bracket.
Basically it uses an older top of the range Garrett main board, that has been refined and schrunk using the latest SMD technology. Very Happy

I take it all back.

I have been putting into practice some of the tips given to me on here and had a lot more satisfaction from the machine. Although I am yet to find anything really worthwhile that is more to do with the sites I am going to than the machine. It does go against the grain a little to walk away when the machine is beeping up and down it's range. I keep thinking about what it could be, instead of what it probably is.

I guess it boils down to time management. Do I spend my time digging a lot just in case? or do I spend my time covering as much area as possible so I can increase my chances of unearthing something worthwhile.

Ray Thanks for the help. What you said sounds so simple but I didn't see it in the instructions or on the Dvd that came with the machine.

What will the larger coil do that the smaller one won't.

Thanks Nevil

Nevill, it´ll give you more ground coverage, and a little extra depth, meaning that you´re covering ground quicker. However, don´t run, slow your sweep speed down and walk very slowly, that way you won´t miss targets. Put a couple of items on the ground and sweep over them with the coil, takin about 2secons from left to right. If you sweep too fast you´ll miss targets, sweep too slow, and you won´t get depth. Every machine has a sweep speed and you need to learn it.
Also, don´t take so much notice of the graphic display, instead listem more to the sound. If it gives a nice sweet middle or high tone, DIG IT. Silver hammered can give almost the same signal as pull tabs, and bottle tops sound like larger coins or rings. Ignore them at your peril. Cool

The original Ace 150/250 was called csi and was devoleped for usa crime scene investigators.

at the moment i use a ace 250 & a gti 2500

the ace 250 is excellent on fresh ploughed fields if ground is damp knock 3 bars of sens if dry and not sticking to boots just drop 2 i normally have set to all metal mode but if a very trashy feild set to jewelry

and as rayredditch says never turn off pull tabs as all my silver hammered pop up under it.

heres a story for you from last year
we were at a rally in buckingshire i was using a ace 250 and my friend was using a minlab se explorer and we walked 1 in front of the other just to see how the ace proformed i was at the back and evry target my friend got i would go over same spot to see if the ace would detect it which it did about 95%
was about half way through second day when i got a loud ping which my friend missed so called him back he scanned over and got a reading when we dug it up was a crotal bell but just shows not mater what machine you got if you get to eratic with swing you will miss targets

heres the original ace under its proper name http://www.garrett.com/hobby/searcher/fall06.pdf is a pdf file so will need adobe pdf file to view it and machine is about 1/2 way down page

All ace 150/250 will reconise screen just theres not exactly the same
